Group Invariance and Convex Matrix Analysis

چکیده
Certain interesting classes of functions on a real inner product space are invariant under an associated group of orthogonal linear transformations. This invariance can be made explicit via a simple decomposition. For example, rotationally invariant functions on R2 are just even functions of the Euclidean norm, and functions on the Hermitian matrices (with trace inner product) which are invariant under unitary similarity transformations are just symmetric functions of the eigenvalues. We develop a framework for answering geometric and analytic (both classical and nonsmooth) questions about such a function by answering the corresponding question for the (much simpler) function appearing in the decomposition. The aim is to understand and extend the foundations of eigenvalue optimization, matrix approximation, and semide nite programming.

ABCD matrix for reflection and refraction of laser beam at tilted concave and convex elliptic paraboloid interfaces and studying laser beam reflection from a tilted concave parabola of revolution
Studying Gaussian beam is a method to investigate laser beam propagation and ABCD matrix is a fast and simple method to simulate Gaussian beam propagation in different mediums. Of the ABCD matrices studied so far, reflection and refraction matrices at various surfaces have attracted a lot of researches. However in previous work the incident beam and the principle axis of surface are in parallel...
متن کاملOrthogonal Invariance and Identifiability
Matrix variables are ubiquitous in modern optimization, in part because variational properties of useful matrix functions often expedite standard optimization algorithms. Convexity is one important such property: permutation-invariant convex functions of the eigenvalues of a symmetric matrix are convex, leading to the wide applicability of semidefinite programming algorithms. We prove the analo...
متن کاملAggregation invariance in general clustering approaches
General clustering deals with weighted objects and fuzzy memberships. We investigate the groupor object-aggregation-invariance properties possessed by the relevant functionals (effective number of groups or objects, centroids, dispersion, mutual object-group information, etc.). The classical squared Euclidean case can be generalized to non-Euclidean distances, as well as to non-linear transform...

aim of this study was to examine factorial invariance of the 20-item Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-Farsi version (PANAS) among male and female university students. A total of 371 undergraduate students (183 males and 188 females) at Shahid Beheshti University completed the Farsi version of the PANAS. First, two-factor model consisted on positive and negative affect were applied to the t...
متن کاملThe Structural Invariance of a Model of Washback to Test Takers’ Perceptions and Preparation: The Moderating Role of Institutions
Test washback is held to be complex and multifaceted in that a host of cultural, social, individual, test, and institutional factors are involved in shaping it. Thus far, the majority of washback studies have had as their focus the role of teachers in test washback or washback to teachers. How educational environments or institutions might function in isolation or in interaction with other fact...
